What Are Post Types
Post types is a term used for the different kinds of text content on a WordPress site. WordPress was originally launched in 2003 as a blogging platform. Posts are general blogging terminology that stuck to the WordPress system as it evolved into a content management system (CMS). When WordPress added a different type of content, pages, it called it another kind of post, and that is where the name “post type” comes from. In later versions WordPress gave developers the ability to register their own kinds of posts. In general, a post type defines the structure and behavior of a particular piece of content.
By default, WordPress offers the following types:
- Post (post)
- Page (page)
- Media file (attachment)
- Revision (revision)
- Navigation menu item (nav_menu_item)
Theme designers and developers can add custom post types using the register_post_type() function or one of the many plugins.
Custom post types have really pushed WordPress toward being a full content management system, because they are now used to build sites of many kinds: real estate sites, movie databases, portfolios, online stores and so on.
