WordPress vs Wix: Which Should You Choose?
A practical comparison for business owners choosing between a website builder and WordPress.
A practical comparison for business owners choosing between a website builder and WordPress.
Short answer: choose Wix if you want a simple site that you build and run yourself within a few days. Choose WordPress if the website is a business asset that has to grow: SEO content, several languages, integrations, your own hosting and full ownership of the code.
Neither platform is automatically better. Wix is an all-in-one product you rent; WordPress is software you own and can move between hosts and agencies.
At a glance
WordPress
Flexible and owned by you
Wix
All-in-one and quick to start
Wix is usually the better choice for a small site built by the owner: a brochure site, a portfolio, a simple booking page or a first online presence. You pick a template or let the AI generate one, edit it visually and the platform takes care of hosting, security and updates.
WordPress is usually the better choice when the site has to work as a sales and marketing channel for years: content that ranks in search, multilingual pages, custom forms and integrations, a real store, and the freedom to change hosting or agency without rebuilding everything.
If you compare only the first month, a builder looks cheaper and faster. If you compare three to five years, ownership, flexibility and the cost of leaving start to matter more than the monthly fee.
Where each platform is stronger
Coma’s assessment for typical business sites (5 = strongest). It is not a measurement or a benchmark.
| Decision factor | WordPress | Wix |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Business websites that need to grow: content, SEO, languages, integrations | Small sites built by the owner: brochure, portfolio, simple services |
| Setup speed | Weeks for a custom site; days with a ready template | Days, sometimes hours with the AI builder |
| Cost model | Free software; you pay for hosting, design, development and optional maintenance | Monthly plan billed yearly, plus apps, domain renewals and transaction fees |
| Control and ownership | Full control of code, database, hosting and data | Control inside the platform; the site cannot be moved as-is |
| Maintenance | You or your agency manage updates, backups, hosting and security | Wix manages hosting, platform updates and core security |
| SEO and content | Very strong for editorial content, custom page types and technical SEO | Solid basics and built-in tools; less room for custom structures |
| Multilingual | Any number of languages with plugins such as WPML; full control of URLs | Built-in multilingual tools; limited control of structure |
| Leaving later | Move to any host or agency | Rebuild on another platform; export is partial |
Wix is strongest when speed and simplicity matter more than flexibility. For many small businesses that is exactly the right trade-off.
WordPress is strongest when the website is part of a longer-term digital system. It gives more freedom, and that freedom has to be managed.
A builder looks inexpensive because the price is one monthly line. Wix plans that are enough for a business site and online payments sit in the middle of its range, and extras such as apps, a custom email, domain renewals and transaction fees come on top. You also pay with your own time: you build, edit and fix the site yourself.
WordPress software is free, but a professional site is not: hosting, design, development, security and updates all need a budget. Hosting on Coma Cloud starts at 10 euros a month, a business-card site from us starts at 800 euros and a care plan is 50 euros a month plus VAT.

The honest comparison is not “free vs paid”. It is “pay monthly, rent the platform and do the work yourself” against “invest once, own the site and have a team maintain it”. Over three to five years the second model is often cheaper per result, especially if the site brings leads.
A site can rank on either platform if it has useful content, fast pages, clear structure and real expertise. The platform alone will not make a weak site rank, and Wix offers sensible SEO tools for titles, descriptions, redirects and structured data.
WordPress has the advantage when content is central: guides, comparison pages, landing pages, case studies and multilingual service pages, each with its own URL structure, templates and internal linking. It is easier to build exactly the page types your strategy needs, and to change them later without losing rankings.
The limitation of a builder usually shows up after the first year, when you want custom page types, large content libraries, advanced technical SEO or a clean migration of hundreds of URLs.
On Wix the platform runs the servers, applies updates and handles core security. That is a real advantage for a team that does not want to think about infrastructure.
WordPress gives you more responsibility: choose plugins carefully, test updates, keep backups that actually restore, size the hosting properly and monitor uptime. Poorly maintained WordPress sites become slow, fragile or vulnerable, which is why we offer a maintenance plan and managed WordPress hosting.
Who looks after what
The fair comparison: Wix is easier to operate by default; WordPress is easier to shape and secure deeply when a competent team looks after it.
Wix lets you move elements freely on the canvas, which is attractive for a first site, and its template library is large. The trade-off is that the design stays tied to the editor: changing the template after launch usually means rebuilding the layout.
WordPress separates content from design. You can use a theme, a page builder or a fully custom design, and change the look later without touching the content. For Latvian businesses this matters when you need Latvian banks and parcel services, an ERP or accounting connection, a CRM, or a custom calculator.
Wix has an app market for common needs. When the requirement is unusual, WordPress lets developers build exactly what the process needs instead of searching for an app.
With WordPress your site is files and a database on a server you choose. You can move it to another host, hand it to another agency or run it on your own infrastructure.
With Wix the site lives on the platform. Text and some data can usually be exported, but the design, the page structure and the apps cannot be moved as they are. If you outgrow the builder, you rebuild.
Lock-in is not a reason to avoid Wix for a small site. It is a reason to decide consciously, before the site accumulates years of content and rankings.
Answer these five questions before choosing a platform:
Five questions to decide
Many of our clients start on a builder and move when the site outgrows it. Wix has no one-click export to WordPress, so the move is a rebuild that carries content over, not a copy of the design.
What the move has to carry over
The biggest SEO risk is changing URLs without redirects, and losing titles, descriptions and internal links during the rebuild.
The biggest SEO risk is not the platform change itself. It is losing URLs, redirects, internal links and metadata during the rebuild. If the site already receives organic traffic, plan the URL map and redirects before development starts.
Choose Wix when you want the simplest way to get a decent small site online and you are happy to build and run it yourself. Choose WordPress when the site has to grow with the business: content, languages, integrations and a clear path to a store or custom features.
The decision is rarely about the logo. It is about who will run the site, how customers find it, what the business needs next year and how easy it should be to change course.
For a business website that has to grow, usually yes: more control over SEO, content, languages, integrations and hosting, and full ownership. Wix is better for a small site that the owner wants online quickly without technical work.
In the first months, often yes. A simple Wix plan is a single monthly fee, while a professional WordPress site needs hosting, design and maintenance. Over several years the picture depends on how much you pay for apps and how much of the work you do yourself.
Yes, but it is a rebuild rather than a one-click export. Text, images and blog posts can be carried over, the design is rebuilt, and redirects must be planned so you keep your search rankings.
Wix covers the SEO basics and offers tools for titles, descriptions, redirects and structured data. WordPress offers more room for custom content structures and deeper technical SEO.
WordPress with a multilingual plugin gives full control over URLs, content and integrations in each language, which is why we use it for most Latvian multilingual sites. Wix can handle simple bilingual sites well.
