The most popular are WordPress and Squarespace. The former can boast that a quarter (!) of all sites on the Internet rest on its shoulders. That is quite powerful, considering there are about 1.2 billion sites on the web. Squarespace, in turn, is much more modest but can boast a more loyal user base. Thanks to a smart marketing approach and the simplicity of the product, this system has attracted millions of site builders. However, if you do not know which system you should use, here is a list of the pros and cons of each.

Pros of WordPress: Community and Flexibility

Since 2010 WordPress has reached version 4.8. I have no programming education, but thanks to the wealth of WordPress resources on the Internet, I was able to build a business that brought in 20% of my income. The community is a separate item on the list of WordPress’s advantages: from the free WordPress Codex to social media groups where hundreds of experts and enthusiasts sit. All of this is more than enough to build your site. Also do not forget that WordPress is free. It costs nothing. The only thing is that you may rent hosting for money from a company that works on its development. You can get a domain name and hosting for around sixty bucks a year. Believe me, that is very little for a home business.

Pros of Squarespace: No Technical Knowledge Needed

To put together sites on Squarespace you do not need any experience or knowledge of coding. If you can write emails and use Word and PowerPoint, you already have all the skills needed to build a site on Squarespace. Squarespace is even simpler than WordPress – you only need to know how to use a browser and enter your credit card number. Squarespace boasts a wide choice of pre-installed templates that look great.

Cons of WordPress: Security and Complexity

The first question beginners have about WordPress is which one to choose. The first option is WordPress.com, which is in essence an analog of Squarespace. You pay to be able to use the features necessary for business, and hosting and technical support are already included in the price. But the problem is that WordPress.com is quite limited compared to the free open version, known as WordPress.org

The .org version is the best option for most people, since it gives unlimited access to themes and plugins. If you want to fully control your site and have all kinds of goodies, this is the choice for you. Among the minuses is that you will need your own hosting, and setting up the site will be a bit more complicated than in Squarespace, Wix or Weebly. Hosting prices start at five dollars a month and go up to several hundred depending on the size and popularity of the sites. WordPress site owners must keep their sites constantly updated for security reasons, and also have some knowledge of hosting to be able to deal with problems that may arise from time to time.

Cons of Squarespace: Prices and Ownership Rights

While hosting for WordPress can be found from 5 dollars a month, the cheapest Squarespace plan starts at twelve bucks a month. On top of that, with Squarespace you do not have rights to your data. If they shut down the service or get hacked, your site will sink into oblivion, since the backups are kept by them. With WordPress on your own hosting you can move to a new host within an hour. Even if WordPress for some reason stops its development, your site will still live on. You can also very easily change, add and remove themes and content. Creating a site with podcasts, a store and so on takes only a few clicks. With Squarespace, however, you are free to do only what Squarespace allows you to do.

The Verdict

For someone who has no technical skills and time but does have a good budget, Squarespace will be the simplest and best option. However, for most people WordPress is a much better fit. Many blogs, including TechCrunch, The New Yorker and others, run on WordPress. So if you are serious about your site and do not want to start from scratch if something happens, the best choice for you is WordPress on your own hosting.

Our specialization is WordPress website development and maintenance.
