In this article we will explain how you can deal with it.

Why Do Some Images Lose Color and Saturation in WordPress?

Many photographers take pictures using the Adobe RGB color space, which offers more colors and much more striking results. However, most web applications, including WordPress, use RGB, which has fewer colors than Adobe RGB. WordPress also applies compression to resized images, which also leads to a loss of quality. So how do you fix this?

The simplest way is to convert your images to the RGB color space before uploading them to the site. This can easily be done in Photoshop.

Method One

Open the image in Photoshop and click File > Save for Web

A dialog box will pop up in which you can tick the box next to Convert the image in RGB.

Method Two

If you are not satisfied with the results of the first method, you can use this one. In Adobe Photoshop go to the Edit > Color Settings menu. A dialog box with color settings will appear.

You need to choose North America Web/Internet from the settings drop-down menu. Then, under the Color management policies area, choose Convert to Working RGB. After that click the OK button to save the settings. Now you need to open the original image or photo you were going to upload. If the profiles do not match, Photoshop will show you a warning and ask what to do.

You need to choose Convert document’s color to working space and then click OK. Now your photo’s color profile will be converted much more accurately. Now you can save the image. Repeat the process for all the photos you are going to upload. Now you can upload them without worrying about loss of color or saturation.

Fixing Loss of Color and Saturation in WordPress with GIMP

GIMP is a powerful and, most importantly, free alternative to Photoshop. You can also use it to convert color profiles for your WordPress uploads. GIMP simply checks every image you try to open for a color profile. If your picture’s color profile is Adobe sRGB, GIMP will automatically offer to convert it.

In some cases GIMP will not be able to detect the profile correctly and you will have to change the profile manually. You will need to know which color profile your photographer used. We assume it is Adobe sRGB, but we may be wrong. Check your camera if you are not sure. GIMP has no built-in Adobe sRGB profile and you will have to download the Adobe sRGB ICC Profile to your computer.

Choose your operating system and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be able to download the ICC profiles as an archive, and after unzipping it you will find the AdobeRGB1998.icc file. Once you have downloaded the ICC profile, just open your image with GIMP and click Image > Mode > Assign Color Profile. You should see a dialog box like this:

Click the drop-down menu and find the ICC profile you downloaded earlier. Click the Assign button to apply it. Once you have applied the color profile, GIMP will be able to convert it to RGB without losing colors. Just click Image » Mode » Convert Color Profile…

GIMP will convert the color profile to RGB and you will be able to save your image. Repeat the process for all the other images you are going to upload to your site.

Our specialization is WordPress website development and maintenance.
