Have you noticed that WordPress version 4.4 introduced a small change to the comment fields? Now the comment box is at the top, while the Name, Email and Website fields are at the bottom. In this article we will show you how to go back to the previous state.

Why Was the Comment Form Changed?

The decision to move the comment box was made to fix a bug. Previously, when users clicked the reply button, they were taken to the comment field and were required to enter their name and email address. However, on mobile devices these fields were invisible, so when people submitted their comments, they got an error. Naturally, all this worsens the user experience, so the error was fixed in WordPress 4.4. Now the comment field looks like this by default.

However, some site owners do not like the new arrangement and want to return to the familiar design. Here is how you can do it.

Moving the Comment Field Down

Just paste this code into your site’s functions.php file.

function wpb_move_comment_field_to_bottom( $fields ) {
$comment_field = $fields['comment'];
unset( $fields['comment'] );
$fields['comment'] = $comment_field;
return $fields;
}

add_filter( 'comment_form_fields', 'wpb_move_comment_field_to_bottom' );

Then you can visit the site as an unregistered user and look at the changes.
