## What You Need Before Installing WordPress

Before you install WordPress, you need a domain and a good web hosting company that knows WordPress.

Since this is quite a long tutorial, use the links below to jump to the section you need:

- How to Install WordPress Using Softaculous
- How to Install WordPress Using FTP
- How to Install WordPress on Your Computer
- How to Install WordPress in Your Language
- How to Install a WordPress Multisite Network
- What to Do After Installing WordPress

### How to Install WordPress Using Softaculous

Softaculous is a popular installation script. It lets you easily install popular web applications such as WordPress in just a few clicks. The hosting companies [SiteGround](https://www.siteground.com/) and [InMotion Hosting](https://www.inmotionhosting.com/) use Softaculous in their control panels.

Log in to the cPanel of your account and find the Softaculous icon or the WordPress installer icon. They are usually located in the “Software” section.

![How to Install WordPress – A Complete WordPress Installation Tutorial 2](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Ekranuznemums-2025-05-01-034507.jpg)

Clicking one of these icons launches the Softaculous auto-installer. First you will see an overview of WordPress. You will need to click the “Install” tab to continue.

![How to Install WordPress – A Complete WordPress Installation Tutorial 3](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/install-wp.jpg)

Softaculous will ask where you want to install WordPress. Choose the protocol **http://** or **http://www.**

If your site uses SSL and HTTPS, you can choose the protocol **https://** or **https://www.**

Next you need to choose the domain name on which you want to install WordPress. Most users install WordPress in the root directory of their domain, for example example.com. In that case, leave the “In Directory” field empty.

Scroll down and you will see the site settings section.

In this section you first need to enter the title and description of your WordPress site. Don’t worry – after installation you can easily change them in the WordPress [admin area](https://coma.lv/en/2024/08/22/what-is-the-wordpress-admin-panel/).

Next you need to choose an admin username, password and email. Softaculous will fill in the username and password fields automatically. Click the key icon to generate a strong password.

If you want, you can change them so that you are sure to remember them. However, we strongly recommend always using a strong password. Read our guide, the best way to manage passwords for WordPress beginners, to learn how to easily handle complex passwords.

Make sure you enter the correct email address. This is where WordPress will send notifications and the password reset link if you forget your password.

The remaining settings are optional. You can click the “Install” button to start the installation.

Softaculous will start the installation using the settings you provided. You will see a progress bar. The installation will take a few minutes; do not close the window until the bar reaches 100%, otherwise you may interrupt the WordPress installation.

![softaclous-wpinstallprogress](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/softaculous-wordpress-progress-bar.jpg)

You will see a success message when the installation is complete. It also shows a link to your site and a link to your WordPress admin area.

### How to Install WordPress Using FTP

Manual WordPress installation is also known as the 5-minute install. However, the manual installation has a few extra steps and you will need an FTP client for it. Read our beginner’s tutorial on [how to use FTP to upload WordPress files](https://coma.lv/en/2024/08/22/how-to-use-ftp-to-upload-files-to-wordpress/).

First you need to download the latest version of WordPress. Unzip the file and use FTP to upload the files to your web hosting directory.

![uploadwpfiles](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/uploadwpfiles.jpg)

If you want to install WordPress on the root domain (example.com), you need to upload the WordPress files to the root directory of your site. This directory is usually called /public_html/.

On the other hand, if you want to install WordPress in a subfolder (example.com/blog), upload the files to the /public_html/blog/ folder.

When you have finished uploading WordPress, go to your hosting control panel to create a database. We use cPanel web hosting. In your cPanel find the “Databases” section and click “Database Wizard”:

You will see a field for creating a new database. Enter the name of your database and click “Next Step”.

![newdb](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Ekranuznemums-2025-05-04-035553.jpg)

Now that you have created the database, you need a MySQL username. This user will have access to all operations in the database. Enter a username and password for the new user, and then click the “Create User” button.

![mysqluser](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Ekranuznemums-2025-05-04-035810.jpg)

This new user still does not have access to the database you just created. For that, you need to add the user to the database and give it permission to perform all operations.

You will be asked which privileges you want to grant this user. Check “ALL PRIVILEGES” and click the “Make changes” button.

![addusertodb](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Ekranuznemums-2025-05-04-040344.jpg)

Now your database and MySQL user are ready, and it is time to run the WordPress installation. Go to the URL where you uploaded WordPress. If it is on your main domain, enter your domain in the browser window, for example yoursite.com or www.yoursite.com.

You will see a language selection page. You can choose your language right here so that the rest of the installation is displayed in the language you need. You can also use English for now and change the language later.

![wpinstall-language](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/wpinstall-language.jpg)

Click the “Continue” button.

You will see the installation instructions. WordPress now needs your database name, password and MySQL information.

![wpinstall-setupinstructions](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/wpinstall-setupinstructions.jpg)

Click the “Let’s go” button to continue.

WordPress will now show you a form. Here you need to enter the name of the database you created.

![wpinstall-dbsettings](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/wpinstall-dbsettings.jpg)

Fill in the information and then click the “Submit” button. WordPress will connect to your database and show a message that the connection was successful.

![wpdbconnected](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/wpdbconnected.jpg)

Click “Run the Install” to continue.

WordPress will create the tables for your database and send you to the next step of the installation.

Now you need to enter the information required to set up your WordPress site: the site title, the administrator’s username, password and email.

If you do not want your site to be available to search engines, you can tick the box next to “search engine visibility”. Later, when you are ready, you can change this setting. If you are not sure, leave everything as it is.

![wpsitesettings](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/wpsitesettings.jpg)

Click the “Install WordPress” button to continue. WordPress will apply the necessary settings and complete the installation.

You will see a success message showing your username. You can click the “Log in” button to enter your WordPress site.

### How to Install WordPress on Your Computer

Many new WordPress users ask whether it can be installed on their own computer. Yes, it can, but most beginners are better off not doing it.

The reason some people install WordPress on a local server is to be able to develop themes or plugins or test something.

If you want to run a blog that others will see, you do not need to install WordPress on your computer. If you install WordPress on your computer, only you will be able to view it.

If you want to make your WordPress site available on the internet, you need to buy a web hosting account and install WordPress using one of the methods we showed above.

However, if you really want to install WordPress on your computer to learn more about theme development, test plugins and so on, we highly recommend doing so. If you use Windows, we recommend that you [download and install WAMP](https://coma.lv/en/2024/08/22/how-to-install-wordpress-on-your-pc-using-wamp/). ### How to Install WordPress in Your Language

Just like Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, you can use WordPress in your own language.

WordPress is available in many languages, including English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Korean, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Portuguese and many others.

You can choose the language during the WordPress installation or change it by going to the **Settings > General** page in the WordPress admin area.

![selectlanguagewp](https://coma.lv/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/selectlanguagewp.jpg)

You can even build a WordPress site in several languages at once.

We have a tutorial on [how to install WordPress in another language](https://coma.lv/en/2024/09/09/how-to-install-wordpress-in-another-language/).

### How to Install a WordPress Multisite Network

The multisite feature is already built into WordPress. The multisite system lets you create several WordPress sites from a single installation. It can automatically create new sites on subdomains or in subfolders.

This is useful for businesses, non-profit organizations and government sub-sites for different localities and regions. Many educational institutions also use the WordPress multisite system to let their students create their own blogs.

Installing a multisite is quite complex, but we have written a full step-by-step tutorial on [how to install and set up a WordPress multisite network](https://coma.lv/en/2024/09/11/how-to-install-and-set-up-a-wordpress-multisite-network/).
